It was important to the owners of this spectacular holiday home in the Marlborough sounds that the home complemented its natural surroundings. Of course, taking advantage of the views was also a priority!
The ‘bach’ was designed by Jarrod Midgley Architect to take advantage of the natural landscape provided by this Marlborough Sounds bay— it can only be described as a private hidden retreat. The use of multiple buildings which are linked by decked walkways with a generous outdoor living area at the centre, means that the space caters to both small intimate stays as well as larger extended family gatherings. The use of the APL Metro Thermal suite has allowed for large spans which provides an abundance of light, while perfectly capturing the breath-taking views of the Marlborough Sounds. The thermal aluminium along with Low-E argon filled glass ensures that the thermally efficiency of the building is maintained.
A location as stunning as this always comes with challenges and this project was no different. With boat access only, the build required a significant amount of coordination and a strong working relationship with the main contractor, Fairfield Construction. The combination of large sliding and bifold doors, and raking windows meant special attention was required to ensure the product arrived onsite looking like it did when it left the factory. With a diverse mix of product types, consideration was required to ensure that visual lines were maintained to tie in seamlessly with the vertical cladding system.
With careful attention to detail and logistics, the owners of this home can be very pleased with the outcome. A stunning private retreat to escape for a weekend, or host a larger gathering, the options are endless as long as you have a boat!
