Mercer Street, Dunedin

Approaching this multilevel home, you realise you are about to walk into something special the moment you see the large deep teal entrance door. This first home is the product of a young couple who set out to build their first house. Having their own building company this was a great opportunity to showcase their craftsmanship. With a simple design, well thought out spaces and a selection of quality finishes and products this young family have worked hard to achieve what they had envisioned.

The section was a steep site presenting its own challenges. The house has been designed to flow with the lay of the land, minimising the impact on the surrounding environment. Taking this into consideration when designing the house ensures that more internal spaces were able to take advantage of the views. A large picture window in the living area frames a view to the local iconic Saddle Hill. The large sliding door off the living room encompasses the rural views.

Energy efficiency was an important factor on this build. The Dunedin winters are cold making thermally broken aluminium frames with high performing low-E double glazing in the windows a must. Dark vertical steel louvres are a feature on the exterior of the house while also offering with shading and privacy.

The house was built in stages to which meant additional planning to co-ordinate site measures and deliveries at different times. The windows feature no reveals, instead Gib board finished into the adaptor. The cladding and cavity make up meant that we needed to design and fit an additional fixing solution to these adaptors as a way of fixing the windows into the house.

This first home is a testament to the builder and his craftmanship. A lovely home for this young family to enjoy the Otago lifestyle.
