Stringer House, Nelson

The owners of this Nelson property wanted to create a home that was modern, yet simple and functional. Making the most of the views and passive solar design were important when putting their plans together with Design Base Architecture.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Tasman, this house is perfectly situated to take in the stunning views offered by the region. The modern simplicity of the design highlights features such as the twin gabled roof and allows for distinct spaces in an open plan layout. The aluminium joinery is constructed using the APL Metro Thermal suite and Low-E glass which meets the passive solar design objective to maximize heat gain in winter and minimize it in summer. The result is an elegant well-designed home that is functional and delivers on the vision of the owners.

The simplicity of the design required particular attention to detail to ensure that all the elements worked seamlessly together. In particular the bi-folding sliders and raking windows which are a feature of the gabled ends needed to be perfectly situated to ensure they aligned to the exterior cladding and did not distract from the internal views. Similarly the sliding doors out to the sheltered courtyard needed to be configured correctly to make the space function as part of the living area or separate area depending on how it was being used. A tight build timeframe meant that communication with the builder, Big Bad Wolf, was vital to keep the build on track for the agreed handover date.

Beautiful contrasts on the inside of this home with the Flaxpod window suite and white walls and also the outside Nordic Pine and black, makes for an eye-catching build. Passive-solar design is achieved through the use of APL Metro Thermal suite and Low-E glass to keep thermal efficiency at it’s best. The windows and sliders allow for vast views over the countryside. A simple, elegant design resulting in a functional
thermally efficient home.
